Skye Hellenkamp is a PhD student at the Yale School of the Environment, where she also earned her Master’s in Environmental Science. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Geography and GIS from the University of South Alabama.
Her research investigates the impacts of deforestation and forest degradation in the Brazilian Amazon, focusing on the critical intersection between large-scale agriculture and remaining forest patches.
Skye uses drones and satellite remote sensing for her research, and also serves as a Drone Facilitator at the Yale Center for Geospatial Solutions, where she conducts flights and data collection for university-wide projects. Additionally, she is a student organizer for the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture Student Seminar Series.
Ultimately, her work aims to use these advanced geospatial tools to develop scalable solutions for monitoring and mitigating forest degradation, helping to understand and protect vulnerable tropical ecosystems.
