Call for Papers: Spring 2024 Environmental Humanities Graduate Symposium

February 25, 2024

The Yale Environmental Humanities Program invites brief submissions of paper proposals from Yale graduate students or postdocs for its 2024 Spring research symposium. The symposium, which is scheduled to take place on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 1st, from 2:30 pm onwards, will provide a forum for researchers across the university to share and discuss work related to the environmental humanities, and include a small reception.

The symposium seeks to showcase current research and foster exchange between students, postdocs, and faculty working across diverse disciplines. Participating graduate researchers or postdocs may offer a presentation in one of two possible formats:

  • Conference-length presentations (10-12 minutes)
  • Lightning talk presentations (4-5 minutes, and only one slide may be used)

In either format, presenters may share a portion or overview of their dissertation or other research project, or draw on article-length and other short-form research efforts.

The environmental humanities constitute a wide-ranging interdisciplinary field that brings together the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. Its goal is to integrate conversations in a variety of subfields including, but not limited to, environmental history, cultural geography, political ecology, science and technology studies, ecocriticism, and environmental anthropology. We encourage submissions from scholars of architecture, history of art, history of science and medicine, languages and literatures, anthropology, area studies, environmental studies and any other discipline or field investigating the intersections of nature and society. All Yale graduate students / postdocs / affiliates who understand themselves to be working within this expansive field are invited to submit proposals for consideration. We seek to be as inclusive as possible in accommodating a variety of humanities approaches and topics in the study of the environment.

Abstracts (150-300 words) should be submitted online via this form by 11:59 pm on Tuesday, March 26th. In case of queries, please contact us at environmentalhumanities@yale.edu.
