HomeForward: Growing Sustainable Affordable Housing

2026 YPS Grant Project

The dual global crises of housing affordability and climate change are inextricably intertwined. Meeting the global need for safe and adequate housing by 2030 requires building 96,000 dwelling units a day. At the same time, the built environment contributes over 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The pilot project HomeForward will address the planetary scale poly-crisis with local collaborative action at home in New Haven. HomeForward will drive forward a solution of net-zero, low-carbon 2-4 family modular housing on small vacant infill lots that are ubiquitous in US cities.

The pilot will support the initial stage of work for a new initiative joining Yale faculty with the New Haven Land Bank in expanding the work of the Housing CT Clinic course. This will grow research and develop scalable and replicable housing solutions that address affordability, health, climate, and wealth-building in cities around the country.
