The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is calling for nominations of Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors and Review Editors for the 2027 Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage. Carbon Dioxide Removal refers to anthropogenic activities that remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it durably in geological reservoirs or in products.
Established in March 2025, the US Academic Alliance for the IPCC (USAA-IPCC) is a network of U.S. universities and colleges that are registered observers with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and have the ability to nominate experts to IPCC activities. The founding members are College of the Atlantic, Colby College, Dickinson College, Indiana University, Princeton University, Rutgers University, University of California-San Diego, Washington University in St. Louis, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and Yale University. The American Geophysical Union hosts the USAA-IPCC. In April 2025, USAA-IPCC members submitted 292 author nominations to the working groups of the Seventh Assessment Cycle Report (AR7).
The content of the 2027 Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage was agreed upon at the IPCC’s 63rd Plenary Session held in Lima from 27 to 30 October 2025. The outline is available on the IPCC website.
There are a number of volumes and chapters as part of the Methodology Report. The Coordinating Lead Authors and Lead Authors are responsible for drafting the different chapters and revising them based on comments submitted during the review process. Hundreds of experts worldwide volunteer their time and expertise to produce the IPCC’s reports. It is important that the author teams aim to reflect a range of scientific and technical views and backgrounds. The IPCC also seeks a balance of male and female experts, as well as between those experienced with working on IPCC reports and those new to the process, including younger experts.
The 2027 IPCC Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage is being prepared by the Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. The Task Force Bureau will select Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors and Review Editors from the list of nominations. The Coordinating Lead Authors and Lead Authors will be expected to attend four Lead Author meetings between 2025 and 2027. The presence of Coordinating Lead Authors and selected Lead Authors may be requested at IPCC Plenary Session in the second half of 2027 where the Methodology Report will be adopted. The time commitment of Review Editors is less than that for Coordinating Lead Authors or Lead Authors, but will include attendance at two author meetings in 2026 and 2027. The USAA-IPCC anticipates being able to support travel funding for the US-based or US-citizen authors who are selected for the Methodology Report.
